Halloween Science

November 5th, 2006 by · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

I was wondering if anyone else tried the halloween science experimentrs with their students. I  did! It was FABOLOUS!!! We were reading a story about spiders in our basil, so to intergrate and keep science as part of the curriculum during this social studies time; we used the putty to make spiders. My students loved it! I also did the dry ice experiment with them and they were so amazed. It is exciting to teach and even more exciting to see the looks on their faces.

Still no science

Still not teaching formal science this week. We are doing research and observations of our mice, India and Keiley. That’s all for today.

No Science for the next few weeks!

October 14th, 2006 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

I don’t have much to say about science this week other than it is not in the lesson plans for the next few weeks. I am still teaching students about mice and continuing to integrate them into the curriculum. I have also somewhat gotten over my fear of them. Adfterall, I am much bigger than them; so what can they do to me?

Furry Mice!

September 29th, 2006 by · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

My students haved named our mice. The white mouse is named Keiley and the black mouse is named India. We have learned that the mice are nocturnal and we have observed that the white mouse is a lot more active than the black mouse. I am still apprehensive about picking them up, but I have caressed their fur. Any suggestions on overcoming my fear?

Integrating Science with Kevin Henkes’ Books

September 24th, 2006 by · 2 Comments · Uncategorized

For the next couple of weeks, my “team teacher” and I will be doing an author’s study on Kevin Henkes and integrating all other content ateas into this unit. In addition we bought mice to display in the classroom. It seems like a perfect idea. We are studying animals and the majority of the characters in Kevin Henkes’ books are mice. I am excited about teaching this unit next week!

Science?

I am frustrated with the idea that scienec can only be taught ONE week, then alternated with social studies the next week. Just because they are urban children, does not mean they should not be taught about science and be exposed to other possible career options. I will change this for the Mrs. Cunningham’s Royalty Kids!
